While no Republican has yet made a formal bid for president, some high-profile potential 2024 hopefuls eager to get Biden out of their seat are huddled with the 154-member RSC, the largest Republican caucus on Capitol Hill. The early confrontation with mainstream conservatives allows these potential candidates to test their campaign messages and policies while building relationships that could lead to valuable political recommendations and fundraising connections down the road.
“Many of the leading Republican voices have reached out to us,” RSC Chairman Jim Banks (R-Ind.) Said in an interview, “because the Republican Study Commission has really been the catalyst for developing the Republican agenda in this new era. and find out where our party comes from, what our party stands for, what our agenda is. “
“We are a policy group, so as we develop an agenda, we have become very attractive to prominent Republican voices and 2024 hopefuls who want to be a part of it.”
That “new era” is one where Democrats control all levers of power in Washington and where Trump no longer occupies the White House, but is still a major force in the Republican Party. Banks and the RSC spent the early months of the new Congress unifying the party’s fragmented fractions behind a conservative agenda that will propel Republicans back into the majority next year – with the help of some of the hopefuls for 2024.
This week, Pompeo, a former member of the House who served as Trump’s Secretary of State, is making his second visit to the RSC in four months. He is working with the RSC on a proposal from Iran and will appear at a Capitol Hill press conference on Wednesday with members to reveal it, The Hill has learned.
Another former Trump official, former United Nations ambassador Haley, will speak to the RSC later this spring, as will Rubio, the Florida GOP senator who ran for president against Trump in 2016 and another bid in 2024. keeps an eye.
Banks said he hopes former Vice President Pence, a fellow Hoosier who served as RSC chairman while in the House of Representatives, can attend the group’s annual retreat later this year.
