Packers GM Brian Gutekunst in attendance for Florida State’s pro day

Jim Nagy, the Senior Bowl executive director, confirmed Monday that Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst was attending Florida State’s pro day. Gutekunst could have explored a wide variety of potential clients, including cornerback Asante Samuel Jr, edge rusher Josh Kaindoh, receiver Tamorrion Terry, defensive lineman Marvin Wilson, edge rusher Janarius Robinson and safety Hamsah Nasirildeen.

Gutekunst was able to see firsthand what the Seminoles class is bringing to the table this year, in terms of their official size and how well they move on the pitch.

One player that stood out was wide receiver Tamorrion Terry. It fits almost perfectly in the mold for the type of receiver that Green Bay likes to aim in the draft in terms of size and speed. Terry measured at 6-2 and 207 and ran a 4.44 in the 40-yard dash. It also has an impressive 33,375-inch arm length.

There were other notable numbers that came out of Florida State’s pro day. Wilson’s wingspan measured at 81.125 inches. For an edge rusher, Robinson had an impressive 86.25-inch wingspan and 25 reps on the bench press. Meanwhile, Kaindoh demonstrated his athleticism by running a 4.70 forty and logging a wide jump of 3 feet 5 inches.

Gutekunst, of course, kept a close eye on Samuel. There is a lot of buzz around former Pro Bowl corner Asante Samuel’s son and how he would look paired with Packers corner Jaire Alexander.

Samuel is of a slim build, standing at 5-10, and weighs just 180 pounds. He ran a 4.45 in his forties but struggled in the three pin exercise. Samuel ran just 6.95, which is considered slightly below average for an NFL angle. Alexander’s three-pin time was slightly faster at 6.71, while Kevin King’s was a 6.56.

However, Samuel and Alexander have similar builds and other athletic tests that compare favorably. They have the same 35-inch vertical jump and a wide jump that differs only a few inches.

During his media availability, Samuel was asked about his size and playing in or out in the NFL. In his answer he referred to Alexander’s size and tenacity as an outer corner.

“I’ve played outside all my life. I feel like I’m a dominant corner on the outside. I am the same size as Jaire Alexander. Size doesn’t matter. It’s about the heart and the dog mentality on the field, ”he said.

Samuel could be the target of Green Bay with their 29th pick, or they could hope he falls for them in the second round. Most preliminary figures have Samuel as a late first-rounder or early second-rounder.

However, Samuel received a RAS score of 6.42 by Kent Lee Platte, which is typically lower than what the Packers are looking for. If Green Bay isn’t from the Samuel Jr. they could turn their attention to a different angle with a better athletic profile.

Gutekunst is clearly doing its due diligence on this year’s crop of prospects after a shortened 2020 season. Gutekunst was also in attendance at Clemson’s pro day on March 11, and will likely be attending many more between now and April’s concept day.
