Packers free up cap space by restructuring S. Adrian Amos’ contract

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers have freed up the cap space by restructuring Adrian Amos’ contract.

Amos, who signed a four-year $ 36 million deal with the Packers in 2019, would count $ 10.3 million by 2021 against the team’s cap. His deal included a base salary of $ 4.9 million and a roster bonus of $ 1.5 million, both of which are converted into a signing bonus to free up cap space.

However, any cap space released in 2021 will be rolled over to 2022, when Amos’s cap hit is already $ 10.9 million. It is possible that the Packers will feel comfortable pushing the money forward, knowing that Amos could be a prime candidate for a contract extension after the 2021 season.

Amos, who turns 28 in April, comes off a great 2020 season. He was the second highest rated safety class at Pro Football Focus.

Restructuring his deal using the signing bonus conversion could release nearly $ 3 million, according to Over the Cap. If the restructuring involves an extension or the addition of voidable years, the savings could be even greater.

The Packers were $ 9.4 million higher than the salary ceiling as of Friday. The team must be under the cap next Wednesday, the start of the new competition year.

Other players capable of restructuring or expansion include quarterback Aaron Rodgers, receiver Davante Adams, edge rushers Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, and offensive lineman Billy Turner.
