As more and more OnePlus 9 Pros end up in the hands of customers, we are hearing reports that the phones may overheat, especially while taking photos or recording video. To none of our readers’ surprise, AP’s own Artem Russakovskii (of #ArtemsLuck fame) ran into the issue. Fortunately, OnePlus tells us this is a known issue that will be addressed in updates in the coming weeks.

Reports on the issue are quite widespread, with a unified discussion of the topic in the OnePlus forums now spanning ten pages with dozens of individual confirmations of the issue. It can manifest in a handful of different circumstances, although using the camera seems to be the most common trigger.
The OnePlus camera app also spits out a large visible warning between two different messages that the phone is overheating: “Your device’s temperature is currently too high, please pause recording [sic] “and” I cannot take pictures because the temperature of the phone is too high “.

This is the last thing you want to see when taking pictures. Barely 6 pictures taken in 5 minutes and this message appeared “Cannot take pictures because phone temperature is too high” 🤬🤬 pic.twitter.com/j9dXfp7mI– Tecworkz (@tecworkz) April 3, 2021
At the same time, an Android system notification may also pop up, which will also let you know when the phone has cooled down enough to be used normally again.
Phone overheating has been a thing for a while, and people recording video or playing games for decades in exceptionally high temperatures have had problems like this for years, but reports indicate that this happens more often with the OnePlus 9 Pro than we would. and at lower potential temperatures. AP’s Artem notes that he ran into the problem simply by recording a video in conditions ranging from a sunny 80 degree day to temperatures as low as 70 degrees indoors. A Pixel 5 running alongside it had no such issues.
We’ve also seen reports of the Galaxy S21 Ultra overheating (especially while using the camera) which begs the question: is this a OnePlus issue or a Snapdragon 888 issue? We’ve noticed that Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset seems to be hot compared to last year’s phones. However, most of those reports are for the Exynos version of the S21.
Anecdotally, I was unable to trigger the issue on my OnePlus 9 Pro review unit even while deliberately trying with back-to-back 4K video recording at high frame rates. The problem can easily vary based on things like using apps in the background or even by unit, as far as we know. Some who have encountered the problem claim that a recent update fixed the problem, but other reports disagree. Some reports further indicate that it could simply be a sensor problem:
The OnePlus 9 Pro is showing overheating in CPU Z and the battery appears to be faulty in the OnePlus Care application. Multiple OnePlus 9 Pro users are dealing with a similar problem. You can see the temperature, it’s normal so it’s probably a software problem. pic.twitter.com/rjKCqKU9eD

Fortunately, we know one thing: OnePlus is aware of this problem. A company spokesperson tells us it’s a known issue, and that future update (s) expected to be released in the next few weeks will fix it – hopefully the issue will be resolved before the summer weather makes things worse.
