One dead, five injured in a stabbing at the Vancouver library, suspect in custody

NORTH VANCOUVER, Canada (Reuters) – One woman was killed and five others injured in a stabbing at a public library near a busy Vancouver suburban shopping area on Saturday, and police said she was the only suspect in were in custody.

The attack took place in the early afternoon and investigators appealed to witnesses, especially those who made videos that were later posted on social media.

“We have six victims who have sustained stab wounds. We have a victim who unfortunately succumbed to injuries. That victim is a woman, ”Police Sgt. Frank Jang said in a press conference broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

“We think we have the only suspect in custody … The question, of course, is why this happened,” Jang told reporters standing in front of the library where the attack took place.

No further details of the victims were provided.

Video of the scene appeared to show a man injuring himself with a knife before being taken into police custody.

Although there was no report on his condition, Jang said the suspect has a criminal record.

“My heart is in North Vancouver tonight,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter. “Know that all Canadians keep you in mind and wish a speedy recovery from the injured.”
