Olympian Klete Keller charged on 7 charges of Capitol riots

Two-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Klete Keller was charged Thursday on seven different charges in connection with his alleged involvement in the riots at the US Capitol last month, according to USA Today.

Keller, according to the report, was charged in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia for knowingly entering and staying in a confined area, disrupting official government affairs, committing disorderly conduct to a hearing of to disrupt Congress and disrupt law enforcement, including in civil disorder.

Keller was recognized by an FBI agent, who said he identified him because of his height – Keller is 1.85 meters – and the Team USA jacket he wore that day. He also reportedly had numerous social media posts supporting former President Donald Trump, although his accounts have been disabled.

The 38-year-old turned herself into Colorado authorities nine days after the Capitol riots and was released without bond. Keller could face more than 15 years in prison, according to the Washington Post.

Keller is reportedly one of the countless violent pro-Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to somehow try to reverse the election results. Five people were killed in the attacks, including a police officer, and a further 140 officers were injured. The House of Representatives has since accused Trump of his involvement – marking his second impeachment. The impeachment trial is currently underway in the Senate.

Keller won gold twice in his career, helping Team USA win the 4x200m freestyle relay at both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, along with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. He also won bronze twice in the 400-meter freestyle in Athens and at the 2000 Games in Sydney. The 4×200 relay team also took silver in Sydney with help from Keller. He retired after the 2008 Games and worked as a commercial real estate agent in Colorado.
