An elderly man collapsed and died Sunday morning in Manhattan, shortly after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination at the Javits Center, a health official said.
The man, in his 70s, fell as he left the building about 25 minutes after his vaccination, according to a statement by Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State Commissioner.
“The first indications are that the man did not have any allergic reaction to the vaccine,” Zucker said in his statement.
During a required observation period of 15 minutes after the vaccination, the man showed no adverse effects from the shot, Zucker said.
First responders delivered help “within seconds,” but the man later died in a nearby hospital, the health commissioner said.
“Public health experts agree that the vaccine is safe, and along with continued vigilance, including mask wearing and social distance, it will end this pandemic,” said Zucker.
“I encourage all eligible New Yorkers to get vaccinated.”
