The Ohio State University is making its popular Swift Coding and App Development certificate program available to the public. By expanding access to learners everywhere, participants acquire advanced skills for today’s modern economy.
Additionally, the university works with local businesses to provide development opportunities for their employees through Ohio’s TechCred program.
In just over a year since its launch, more than 3,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni have enrolled in the certificate program, completing modules at their own pace on their schedule and building valuable skills. This new, public series of courses expands the opportunity for anyone interested in learning to code and build apps that are ready for the App Store.
Horizon Two Labs, a Columbus-based venture studio that helps launch, develop and operate technology startups, supported the enrollment of its employees for the courses. Chief Technology Officer Zak Dziczkowski said the courses will help build the Horizon Two team’s knowledge base.
“Horizon Two Labs’ focus is on bringing big new ideas to life. The ability to build and iterate new ideas quickly and efficiently is a necessity at this early stage. We build many consumer-facing products and the Ohio State Swift Coding courses help build the front-end skills of our team, ”he said. “Our team is all striving to be polyglots. This requires constant learning and training on all aspects of the business. “
The four-course series is designed to make it easy for participants to learn to code and develop apps using Swift, Apple’s open-source programming language. They also walk away with a range of stackable certificates and practical skills.
“This coding and app development certificate program offers anyone, regardless of their background or prior knowledge of coding, the opportunity to learn a tangible, actionable digital skill that provides them not only instant skills to use and explore but also a basis for the future: learning, innovation and creativity in the digital world, ”said Cory Tressler, director of learning programs and Digital Flagship.
The self-paced curriculum allows participants to progress through lessons on their schedule, which comes easy to speed up and spend more time in areas they want to develop. Courses are completely online so lessons can be accessed and completed from anywhere. The courses are built around Apple’s coding program and development tool, Xcode, used by students as well as professional developers to create apps for Apple platforms. Xcode is available as a free download for the Mac.
Once participants complete the courses, they can use their new skills and continue to earn App Development with Apple’s Swift certification in addition to their credentials in the state of Ohio.
Ohio’s TechCred program gives employers the opportunity to educate current and future employees in today’s technology-infused economy. Employers can submit applications for reimbursement up to $ 2,000 when current or prospective employees complete Ohio State courses.
