Officials in West Virginia accidentally gave 42 people a COVID-19 antibody treatment in place of Moderna’s vaccine.
The West Virginia National Guard said in a statement that it “heard of an error” Wednesday that led to the individuals receiving Regeneron’s COVID-19 antibody treatment in place of the vaccine.
The National Guard said the individuals have been contacted and that the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services will monitor these individuals as an additional precaution.
The incident took place at a vaccination clinic hosted by the Boone County Health Department.
In a separate statement Posted to Facebook on Thursday, the department said it was “determined to be an isolated incident,” adding that the individuals will be offered the vaccine.
The health department and the National Guard both said they do not believe there is any risk of harm to the individuals.
It is unclear how the confusion originated. Julie Miller, a health department clerk, did not provide additional details about the incident when she was approached for comment.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services also did not provide additional details.
The Food and Drug Administration licensed emergency use for antibody treatment end of November for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and in children at least 12 years old who are at high risk of progression to serious disease.

The incident isn’t all that has happened as states race to vaccinate their populations.
Earlier this week, an employee at a Wisconsin medical center “deliberately” removed 57 vials of Moderna’s vaccine from a freezer and thrown them away.
