An obese monkey kept in a Thai market that has been blown up to a dangerous size after being fed junk food by passersby is now being sent to a fat camp to get back in shape.
The three-year-old primate, called Godzilla, was seen earlier this month in Bangkok’s Min Buri district, where visitors crowded over the stall where the monkey sat and attempted to feed it.
Godzilla has drawn comparisons to the late Uncle Fatty, a long-tailed macaque who is believed to have eaten himself to death.

In a video, the fat monkey, tied to the market stall, can be seen wearing a tight blue top.
Godzilla rests on a pile of pillows and stuffed animals in the corner of the booth as he plays and plays with things around him, including a Playboy coronavirus face mask that he picks up from the floor.
Shopkeeper Manop says Godzilla works out every morning but hasn’t been able to slim down his figure. Manop now sends the monkey to a primate fat camp in an attempt to get the monkey in shape.
Shopkeeper Manop said she adopted Godzilla after he was abandoned by the stall’s previous owner.
She said she feeds the monkey and treats him well, but has not been able to control his weight.
The rescue team found Godzilla when he was very young. And since he grew up and was fed by humans, he doesn’t know how to find food for himself in the wild, ‘Manop said.
The three-year-old macaque weighs twice as much as an average macaque, which normally weighs between eight and ten pounds, and has been sent to a fat camp to slim down.

Godzilla’s weight has now exploded to over 3 (20 kg) – almost as heavy as Uncle Fatty, who dropped the scales to over 4 (27 kg) and was believed to be between 10 and 15 years old . Macaques normally weigh between eight and ten pounds.
In the video, Godzilla gets fresh fruit from its owners and is seen enjoying a large banana, perhaps hoping to break his dependence on junk food.
Manop said Godzilla exercises every morning but still hasn’t been able to move the weight.
She added that the monkey doesn’t like to be touched by strangers and will start acting wild if it doesn’t like the person.
“I’m taking Godzilla to the market where I can take care of him. I don’t like that he is alone because he gets stressed.

Thailand is home to hundreds of thousands of wild monkeys, including gibbon, macaque, langur and lorikeet, which roam freely and are popular with tourists.
They often live alongside human populations and are known to steal food for survival.
However, they can also be an attraction for tourists and many have found that they are often happy with food.
