NYC Weather: Several more snow rounds this week

NEW YORK (WABC) – While the rest of the Sunday will be dry, several rounds of winter rainfall during the week are expected to cause dangerous travel through the Tri-State.

A winter weather advisory is in effect through Tuesday morning for much of the Tri-State area.

In parts of northern New Jersey and in Orange County, New York, an ice storm warning has been issued from 6:00 PM Monday to 10:00 AM Tuesday.

Temperatures stayed below freezing on Sunday after a winter mix brought ice and slippery roads overnight.

The National Weather Service predicted for much of the Tri-State area up to 12 inches of snow or sleet, with a glaze of ice possible.

More icing will be possible Monday through Tuesday evenings and there will be a wide impact on travel across the Tri-State.

This one is basically a boosted version of the weekend storm with the potential for icy conditions from more sleet and sleet.

However, the storm may not be as friendly to parts of New York State to the north and west.

On Sunday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered the state to prepare their emergency resources as heavy snow, sleet, and ice are expected to hit much of the state.

“New York is predicted to see another winter round of weather early this week, and state agencies have already begun to prepare resources and personnel for a response,” said Governor Cuomo. Not only can some parts of the state see up to 12 inches of snow, but this storm is also expected to bring ice and a winter mix down states, creating the potential for very dangerous travel conditions.

The heaviest snow is expected in parts of western and central New York, as well as the northern areas of the Mid-Hudson region. Some of those areas can be 6 to 12 inches in size.

For New York City, Long Island and the lower Mid-Hudson region, a winter mix of sleet and / or sleet kicks off Monday evening.

North of the city, temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-twentieth century, which can result in ice up to 1/5 inch across parts of the Lower Hudson Valley.

Temperatures in New York City will rise to the mid-1930s on Tuesday, with precipitation turning to rain.

Ice buildup by Tuesday can be a few hundredths of an inch to one-tenth of an inch before the storm clears in the evening.

Wednesday we get a short break for the sun, but on Thursday there will be another snow storm in the area.

Amy says this storm will cause snow first, before turning into a rainy mix at the rear.

The good news: We could recover on Friday with dry weather and milder temperatures.

New York City has already surpassed the city’s seasonal average snowfall of 28.5 inches, as 32.5 inches of snow has fallen in the city so far in the 2020-2021 season. This season’s total is just over 2 feet more than the total for the 2019-2020 season, in which New York City officially recorded just 4.8 inches of snow.
