NYC Weather: Major winter storm to bring snow, winds to Tri-State from Sunday night

NEW YORK (WABC) – A major, protracted winter storm is scheduled to hit the Tri-State area from Sunday evening and all the way through early Tuesday.

Parts of the area will pick up 6 “-12” snow from this nor’easter, even in New York City, and more than 12 inches is not excluded.

In the meantime, Saturday night will be clear to partly cloudy and cold as lows plunge into the teens.

Sundays will be chilly with increasing and thickening clouds as the highs remain in the upper 20s.

Snow lasts until Sunday evening, arriving from southwest to northeast, collecting 1 “-3” at night when it gets windy.

Roads fill with snow and become slippery as temperatures drop to the mid-1920s.

Mondays are cloudy and windy with periods of snow, the heaviest of which should be in the afternoon and at night.

Ice can sometimes mix, especially on the coast, holding back build-ups south and east of New York City.

Wind gusts of 40-50 miles per hour are possible, mainly on the coast and over Long Island.

Temperatures can reach just above freezing in the city.

The storm will slowly recede on Tuesday, but it will still be windy and chilly with continued snow showers and gusts.

Additional significant accumulation is not likely during Tuesday’s day, but occasionally flakes still fly.
