In a statement Sunday, the governor blamed the Trump administration for failing to implement such a shutdown, saying it did not learn from the virus’s first hit in the spring.

Cuomo noted that several European countries have banned flights from the UK in light of the new species, including Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France.
Cuomo’s comments come when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the country would not be able to ease restrictions on Christmas gatherings as initially planned.
“Given the early evidence we have on this new variant of the virus, and the potential risk it poses, I have to say with a heavy heart that we cannot go ahead with Christmas as planned,” Johnson tweeted Sunday.
The Italian Ministry of Health, meanwhile, announced on Sunday that the new strain had been detected in a patient who had recently returned from the UK.
