The newly sworn president plans to name Susan Orsega, a nurse and officer in the United States Public Health Service Corps, as one of the first nurses to serve in the role, two people with knowledge of her selection told the Post. A source said Biden was able to select Orsega to serve as early as Tuesday.

The White House and the Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

The confirmation hearings for Murthy, who served as surgeon general during former President Obama’s administration, have not yet been scheduled.

“The committee is ready to begin aggressive planning of hearings as soon as we organize them, with nominations a top priority,” spokesman Madeleine Russak of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee told the Post.

Orsega will not be the first nurse in the position. Sylvia Trent-Adams served as Acting Surgeon General under Trump and Richard Carmona was confirmed as Surgeon General under former President George W. Bush.

Her roster would come as the country faces the coronavirus pandemic that, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, infected more than 25 million people in the US and killed more than 420,000.
