Nurse escapes crashed car in Fort Worth deadly pile, continues to work

FORT WORTH, Texas The mess of crashed cars has now been removed on I-35W in Fort Worth, where six people died in a massive traffic jam Thursday morning.

We now hear an incredible story from survivors. Trapped in her crashed car, a Fort Worth nurse went to incredible lengths to get out alive.

Rebecca Benson is just one of many accident victims. She is still recovering from minor physical injuries and significant mental trauma. As she recovers, her husband shared her survival story.

Ryan Benson’s emotion goes beyond words.

“Today is the reality, the realization that yesterday I almost lost my whole world,” he said. ‘I am so incredibly proud of her. So proud. And so grateful. We have been married for over 18 years and we have two children and we have a life. ‘

Ryan’s wife, Rebecca, crawled out of the back of their Dodge Durango and walked away from the pileup scene without serious bodily harm.

Ryan explained how his wife survived just seconds after she found herself riding right off two 18-wheelers crashing in front of her.

“When she started to slide and realized she couldn’t stop herself, she just thought of two things: I’m going to go as limp as I can, be as relaxed as I can be, and aim the vehicle where it can be safest. go, ”Ryan explained.

Rebecca decided the safest place to crash was between two 18-wheelers.

“I told her I wouldn’t have chosen that because my mind would have thought I would be in those 18 wheels,” Ryan said. Well, this is the emergency room. This is her starting career. ‘

Rebecca is no stranger to trauma. She is a nurse at Cook Children’s Hospital with more than a decade of experience. Before that, she drove an ambulance.

“Yesterday was probably the most helpless I’ve ever felt in my life because I couldn’t reach her,” said Ryan. “Yesterday was full of fear and panic and anxiety.”

Ryan was home when he received the first call from his wife at 6:17 AM. Her first words were, “I’m fine, but an accident has happened.”

Meanwhile, in the resulting traffic jam, a colleague called Rebecca to warn her. She had no idea that Rebecca had already crashed.

Although she was bruised and mentally exhausted, Rebecca made contact with that colleague and continued to work.

She asked, ‘Where are you all?’ And he told her. And she just decided, “I’m walking,” said Ryan. “She just started walking north 35. She said she was walking somewhere between half a mile and a mile, and it’s 25 degrees. . ‘
