Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Tina Turner and Iron Maiden are among this year’s nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a strong female roster of 16 artists, including The Go-Go’s for the first time, Mary J. Blige. And Dionne Warwick.
Artists are eligible for a nomination 25 years after the release of their first official recording. Jay-Z and Foo Fighters were among those first eligible, while Blige, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Warwick and Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti are among the first to receive their first nomination.
Several candidates are looking for a second place in the room. Turner was to be recorded for the second time, as it was already part of Ike & Tina Turner in 1991. The nominee Carole King had already been recorded as a composer and this time she would do so as a performer. Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl is now also a member of Nirvana.
If elected, King and Turner would be the second and third female performers to be doubly inducted, following the 2019 election of Stevie Nicks, who was already a member of Fleetwood Mac.
“This remarkable vote reflects the diversity and depth of artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates,” said John Sykes, president of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, in a statement released Wednesday. “These nominees have had an indelible impact on the world’s sonic landscape and influenced countless artists who have followed them.”
Other nominees this year include Kate Bush, Devo, Chaka Khan, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine and Todd Rundgren. LL Cool J received his sixth entry and Chaka Khan his third as a solo artist.
The 2021 honorees will be announced in May.
