Raleigh, NC – An investigation has shown that a hand grenade found Sunday in a Raleigh yard is not dangerous.
A Raleigh police spokesman said the grenade was real, but a hole had been drilled in the bottom with no gunpowder in it. He added that the grenade is being sold as a novelty in surplus stores.
Officials said the grenade was very corroded from being underground for a long time.
Residents of the 600 block of East Cabarrus Street endured a tense few hours – three houses were briefly evacuated – after a person working found the grenade and called the police.
Three members of the Raleigh Police bomb threat removed the grenade and determined it was not a threat.
It was not immediately clear where the grenade could come from, how old it is or how long it has been in the yard.
