Lame & Watch
Nintendo has blocked videos of a modder who successfully hacked his Game & Watch handheld so that it can play various other titles. Two videos on YouTube were made unavailable after the publisher filed copyright claims on the channel in question.
This account belongs to modder “Stacksmashing”, which it Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Game & Watch device back in November and immediately began tinkering with the $ 50 handheld, experimenting to see what could be done with its rudimentary technology. Stacksmashing has successfully deployed several titles via ROM swaps, including the original NES edition of The Legend of Zelda and, of course, id Software’s Doom.
But unfortunately Nintendo has not been too kind to Stacksmashing experiments and has filed copyright claims against their videos, which were confirmed by YouTube. Stacksmashing notes on Twitter that instead of being picked up by an algorithm, their videos were picked out by a Nintendo representative. Nintendo’s claims seem targeted specific at the use of in-game images, rather than referring directly to hacking the hardware itself.
Ultimately, it’s another day at the office for Nintendo, which has long was very strict when it comes to any kind of circumvention of the games, hardware or software regions. So if you choose to play with your Game & Watch, don’t upload the results to YouTube … Or don’t play Nintendo games on YouTube? … or both? … or all three?
