Nightfall is a sequel mod with a lot of promise

Here’s a solid chunk of gameplay for this upcoming Dark Souls: Remastered mod

The maker of the known Daughters of Ash mod for Dark souls is back with an even bigger and bolder project, a group-made project, and they’ve released an 18-minute gameplay preview. The project, Dark Souls: Nightfall, is a “direct sequel” that begins with a leap of faith into the furnace of the first flame, exactly where Gwyn was killed by the chosen undead in the original ending.

Nightfall promises “a new story, a new combat system, a new world map and more.”

To spice that up a bit, the assets in this mod aren’t all new, but the creators and collaborators – Grimrukh, AinTunez, Meowmaritu, horkrux, Dane Brennand, wulf2k, Souv, ZullieTheWitch, Itzli and Martin Billany – are doing everything they can to make Nightfall feel separate and fresh for fans.

That includes story-motivated gameplay mechanics (like crazy-looking dodge), NPCs’ voiced, ‘faster’ combat, enemies that have been re-structured and given ‘heavily modified animations’, and a world that’s partly Lordran as we know it and partly new zones built from “existing map pieces”.

The preview images demonstrate all these elements. Aside from the Blistering Demon and the potential for other challenging boss fights to try, I’m most intrigued by the time-shifting properties of Gwyn’s Hanger, a “locket with remains of the First Flame.” At the beginning of Nightfall, a text prompt says that “twelve embers remain”; About ten minutes later, another ominous message warns that there are eleven left, and the player uses Gwyn’s Pendant to go back in time.

The pendant item description suggests that “only the [player’s] memories and special possessions’ will make the journey back fans are already looking for. They speculate about a time-based hook in Nightfall no different than Majora’s maskThat would be quite the merging of the spirits, if that’s true.

Nightfall has no release date, but you can play it with a copy of Dark Souls: Remastered
