New Zealand’s largest city to be locked again after a new COVID-19 case

New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, is back to a seven-day lockdown after a new coronavirus case came to light.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the move on Saturday, while officials in this case are still trying to find out the origin of the coronavirus, Reuters reported

Countries have been closely monitoring variants of the virus in the United Kingdom, Africa and Brazil.

Officials say the patient was contagious on Sunday and visited several public places before realizing they had symptoms two days later.

The residents of the city are only allowed to go shopping or for essential work for the next week. The rest of the country has level two lockdowns and does not allow large gatherings.

New Zealand saw some cases of coronavirus earlier this month, three of which were the coronavirus variant from the UK

There are indications that the British variant is more contagious and deadly than previous variants.

Officials are trying to see if the new case is related to the previous cases.

New Zealand has seen more than 2,000 reported cases and more than 20 deaths from the virus, dramatically smaller numbers compared to other countries, with the nation shutting down after new cases emerge.
