The city of New York decided this Sunday that it will suspend classes and the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus tomorrow Monday because a strong storm is expected that can leave up to 45 centimeters of snow.

The city’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, announced that all agreements to get vaccinated against Covid-19, whose wave is starting to give the city a break after the holidays, will be postponed until further notice. “The last thing we want is for our elders to go out in the midst of such a storm,” said the president.

Also, colleges in America’s largest school system will close at least Monday.

State and city governments have asked all residents of New York and surrounding areas to do so do not go outside or drive if you do not need to, as heavy snow is expected from Sunday afternoon.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) predicts that the storm, one of the strongest this winter, will hit New York with high winds and with the possibility of leaving about half a meter of snow.

The storm has already caused heavy snowfall, winds and Arctic temperatures in Chicago and Washington DC, but its strength is expected to be especially felt in New York.

Given this scenario, New York has mobilized some 2,000 snow plows to receive potentially the largest snowstorm to hit New York since 2016.

New York state is still the country most affected by the pandemic with 43,453 dead, followed by California (40,702), Texas (36,924), Florida (26,360), Pennsylvania (21,617), New Jersey (21,484) and Illinois (21,213).

The US authorities, who have started a national vaccination campaign with failures and some sluggishness, want to speed up injections to cover a large portion of the population before the summer. For this reason, this suspension represents a new obstacle for the New York authorities in their vaccination campaign.

Last week, De Blasio noted that the city was practically out of vaccines against the coronavirus, so it had to suspend its plans to open stadiums during the vaccination campaign and advised the population not to plan with groups of people until the summer.

The mayor pointed out that the city has only 7,700 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 and asked federal authorities to use the doses reserved for the second dose, even with the risk that the vaccinees will not receive the required second injection at the scheduled time. time of day. . “We are stuck, we cannot perform vaccinations because we do not have enough vaccines”explained the Mayor of New York, who is forced to cancel appointments to vaccinate and suspend plans indefinitely to allow the Yankees stadiums and Citi Field to run a massive vaccination campaign, as there are no injections.

De Blasio said he has 100,000 reserved doses that are not being used and has asked federal authorities and President Joe Biden’s new administration for permission to release them.
