New York Giants, Jason McCourty are breaking up without a deal… for now

The New York Giants met on Friday night veteran defender and hometown Jason McCourty, and the meeting reportedly went well.

Despite a positive meeting between the Giants and McCourty, the two parted ways without a deal. The good news? The door remains open to future negotiations and a potential contract somewhere down the road (likely after the 2021 NFL draft).

As we noted earlier, 33-year-old McCoutry was part of our Homegrown Legends Team in September / November. This is what we wrote about him at the time:

McCourty and his twin brother, Devin, were born and raised in Rockland County, New York, and attended high school just across the state line at Saint Joseph Regional High in Montvale, New Jersey. Jason, who played corner and was a star who ran back, was recruited more heavily than Devin, who played safety. Jason considers attending Boston College, but the Eagles did not offer Devin a scholarship. When Rutgers made an offer to both Jason and Devin, the brothers committed to the Scarlet Knights.

Jason recorded 150 tackles in 47 games with Rutgers and was called up by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round in 2009. He spent eight seasons with the Titans and one with the Cleveland Browns before joining Devin with the New England Patriots in 2018. Jason has 18 interceptions in 150 NFL regular season games and won Super Bowl LIII with the Pats.

McCoutry received a Pro Football Focus score of 55.7 last season, the second lowest of his career. However, that comes after three consecutive seasons with a score of 74.4 or better.

There’s also some level of notoriety between head coach Joe Judge and McCoutry, so we’ll see if that plays a role in future negotiations or a potential deal. The Giants could certainly use a different cornerback, so don’t expect this interest to just stop.
