New York City is digging out of the monstrous blizzard; elementary students will be back in person on Wednesday

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – Overground metro service resumed Tuesday at 5:00 am after a marathon nor’easter threw more than a foot of snow on New York City.

The service was suspended Monday afternoon as crews worked to clear snow from those elevated tracks.

Officials expected some delays today.

Public schools in NYC are all keeping their distance on Tuesday after personal learning is suspended Monday. Elementary students will resume personal learning on Wednesday.

Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York will remain closed on Tuesday, another “traditional snow day” with no distance learning.

Archdiocesan secondary schools operate independently, so secondary school families should follow the instructions of their individual schools.

The city has canceled all scheduled COVID-19 vaccinations for Monday and Tuesday, and the food distribution and learning bridges childcare program has been canceled in schools on Monday.

“The last thing we want is to urge our seniors to come out in the middle of a storm like this,” de Blasio said. ‘It does not make any sense.’

The vaccinations are expected to resume on Wednesday.

Outdoor dining will resume for city restaurants from 3pm on Tuesdays.

NYC Sanitation Commissioner speaks Tuesday of snow removal efforts

Outdoor dining was suspended during the storm, and some restaurants left their heaters on to melt snow.

Others removed the roofs from their buildings, fearing they would collapse under the weight of the snow.

The city remains dependent on New Yorkers to stay off the roads while they dig.

“Give everyone in the sanitation department the opportunity to do their job by staying out of the way,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “It’s overwhelming … all over the five boroughs, New Yorkers are responding to that call, they stay home, they stay off the street. Which is good. Keep doing it until this is all over. ‘

As for MTA buses, they run on a reduced schedule, 75 percent of normal today.

Commuters are urged to allow themselves extra time if they have to leave.

Alternative side parking spaces are suspended for the rest of the week.
