New Mexico state police say an officer was shot dead on the highway

A New Mexico state police officer was fatally shot on a highway on Thursday, and authorities chased and killed the attacker in a shootout, officials said.

The killed officer has been identified as 28-year-old Darian Jarrott, KVIA-TV El Paso reported. Authorities have also released the name of the attacker who was killed, 39-year-old Omar Felix Cueva.

State police said one of her officers was gunned down in Luna County between Las Cruces and Deming during a clash along Interstate 10 in southern New Mexico.

They said multiple agencies then chased the suspect’s vehicle into the Las Cruces area before gunfire took place.

The suspect was killed and a Las Cruces police officer was shot.

The officer was taken to a hospital in El Paso with injuries that were not life-threatening, Las Cruces police spokesman Danny Trujillo said.

State police had said they had limited information and could investigate two separate shooting scenes 50 miles apart.

Las Cruces police closed the highway at the shooting and told drivers to use a different route until the investigation was completed.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has ordered that all flags at state buildings be lowered to half-staff from Friday to Tuesday in honor of the state police officer who died while on duty.
