Richard Pitino will be out of work for less than a day.
Pitino, who was fired by Minnesota Monday night, is expected to be named the next head coach in New Mexico, sources told ESPN.
An official announcement is expected soon.
Pitino spent eight seasons in Minnesota, attending two NCAA tournaments. The Golden Gophers finished one game under .500 in each of the past two seasons, losing seven consecutive games to finish the last regular season, dropping out of the NCAA tournament count.
Before taking over the Golden Gophers, Pitino spent a season as a head coach at FIU and an assistant coach at Louisville, Florida, Duquesne, Northeastern and Charleston.
Pitino would replace Paul Weir, who was fired after four seasons in Albuquerque. The Lobos have not made it to the NCAA tournament since 2014.
