Disney + ‘s WandaVision series has (usually) been a chipper broadcast event for the Scarlet Witch and her synthezoid husband. They’ve already experienced the imposed happiness that ’50s,’ 60s, and ’70s sitcoms are built on, but a clip from Friday’s upcoming episode seems to be exploring what’s behind the TV veneer …or rather, what is around it.

When you get to the end of last week’s episode, Teyonah Parris’ Geraldine was literally thrown out of the town of Westview – and the mysterious bubble surrounding it – seemingly because he brought up Wanda’s brother and his death by Ultron Age of Ultron. This clip, which appears to be set prior to that event, apparently confirms a lot of things we already had confidence in, but still manages a few surprises.

“Geraldine” – better known in the realities of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Monica Rambeau, adult daughter of Captain Marvel‘s Maria Rambeau and, in the comics, a superhero himself– and agent of SHIELD Jimmy Choo (Randall Park) clearly encounter the Westview bubble for the first time here, before Monica is willingly or unintentionally drawn into the warped reality on television inside. And if last week’s chain hint wasn’t enough, It’s worth pointing out that Monica is indeed she is wearing a T-shirt with the SWORD logo, which presumably means she is part of the Sentient World Observation and Response Department.

SWORD, the alien sister agency to SHIELD in the comics, got his first great teasing in the MCU at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the film seemingly hinting at his arrival in the form of the new organization run by Nick Fury and a legion of friendly Skrulls via spaceship in her post credits scene. (In fact, I suspect Jimmy switched to SWORD too, if only for simplicity.) Nothing shocking there, at least so far.

There are some nice things in the clip, though. First, there is its triumphant return Dr. Darcy Lewis, who has moved up from Jane Foster’s intern in Thor to help SWORD with the WestView situation. And if you look at that wall of SWORD files on the city’s residents, they all have a driver’s license card attached to it … with the exception of Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) and Dottie (Emma Caufield), the latter of which appears to have no file at all. Hmm. Those licenses are also all from New Jersey; in the first Vision and the Scarlet Witch comic series From 1982, the couple moved to the suburbs of Leonia, New Jersey, after they married and retired from the Avengers.

Relief! That’s a lot of layers. Not bad for a 53 second clip-slash trailer! We’ll probably see it and more tomorrow when WandaVision returns for an episode 4.
