Luis Miguel is back. He’s not the real Luis Miguel, who played on stage two years ago at the most embarrassing moments of his career, but the best version of himself. The person who offers the series about his life that Netflix makes under its own supervision. The secrets of the call Sun of Mexico they are unveiled again in a second season, one of the most anticipated in Mexico and Latin America, after the success of the first managed to fly over the debate of a desktop and television show, with no presidential election in Mexico and even a World Cup. football overshadowed him in 2018. A series that exposed the darkest and best-preserved part of the Mexican singer’s life, a massive musical phenomenon that concentrates the ambitions, fears and desires of millions of Latin Americans in the image of a single man. This Luis Miguel returns to the living rooms of the houses on April 18.
Netflix had announced its premiere in 2020 a year ago. The pandemic slowed the expectations of viewers who gave unprecedented success to a series that promised more than it had to offer at the end of the first season. The big questions: what happened to Luis Miguel’s mom, Marcela Basteri? And who killed her? They remain a mystery that may not be solved in this new episode, but the following chapters will of course continue to fuel the idol’s intimate life appeal.
The singer took advantage of the tree of this series three years ago to launch a tour of Mexico, Spain and the United States. A perfect springboard, many critics came across, for an artist in the field of tightrope walking – millionaire lawsuits and concert cancellations. This time, given the health crisis resulting from the pandemic, the artist has not announced an event and will only be the image of the best Luis Miguel projected in front of his fans, and many others curious.
The series and film platform currently have no idea what topics this second season will cover. Although according to the time in which the chapters that follow are framed, it corresponds to the most wonderful moment of his career. Journalist Martha Figueroa, author of the biography Micky, another tribute (Aguilar, 2010) and who has followed the singer for more than 25 years, explains the key moments of those years: “We are talking about the duet with Frank Sinatra, the record of concerts followed in the National Auditorium of Mexico, the extremely successful seasons in Las Vegas, Argentina and Spain, ”he says.
Moreover, this stage collides head-on with the beginning of the decline: “After the death of Hugo López [su mánager, que aparece en la primera temporada], who was more than a representative, he was his guide, conflicts with other of his employees continued, fights in court … This is where instability begins in his career, ”Figueroa adds. While Luis Miguel grew unstoppable to international success, some of his most controversial romances were known, such as the one with the American singer Mariah Carey and his relationship with the actress Aracely Arámbula, with whom he had two children. “While this part I don’t know if it will appear because I understand that the lawyers have not reached an agreement on the rights,” said the journalist. Above all, it was here that the most inaccessible Luis Miguel was born, the myth: “It is the time when no one could approach him and he separated from the press and the public.”
Luis Miguel’s life has always been accompanied by the political and economic movement of Mexico. The singer grew up in the house of a Mexican since the early eighties and has not yet left. From the humblest to the richest. And there are few things in Mexico that have united more than El Sol. In a hugely unequal society, he represented what everyone wanted to be: a winner. For decades he has accompanied more than one generation through his songs, but also through his scandals. Luis Miguel’s new girlfriend became a national debate, too, his life of luxury and yachts, his problems with alcohol, leaving the stage, the millionaire demands. As he himself said in an ad for the first season, few knew the truth of that story.
The first season brought to light the villain who became Mexico’s public enemy: Luis Rey, his father. The most hated character, but also the most respected for a unique portrayal of the Spanish actor Óscar Jaenada, said goodbye in the last episode and was the most tragic of the season and one of the pillars of the series disappeared. A role that had seduced the viewers to the point where they imitated his Cádiz accent and his ‘pussy, Mickey’ in all corners of Mexico.
-Where is my mother?
“He’s gone, Mickey.” He went…
The artist had promised to tell “the only truth” about his private life. “Why are you denying me something that I know you know? Do you know what damage this is doing to me?” Said the actor Diego Boneta, who plays Luis Miguel in the series, his father in fiction. But the final chapter did not reveal Marcela’s whereabouts, to the dismay of millions of viewers who waited until then to learn the truth.
One ad for the new season sees a solar eclipse and a message: “The brighter the sun, the darker the shadows.” In the spring, a few months before the next Mexican election, which sees the renewal of the Chamber of Deputies, electing 15 governors and 2,000 other positions, Luis Miguel and the mysteries of his life will once again mark a national public debate.
