MEXICO CITY – Like classic thrillers, the new Latin American Netflix series “Who Killed Sara?” It starts with a shocking death whose protagonists try to resolve … or hide, depending on their interests.
Sara, played by Ximena Lamadrid, dies during a weekend of partying and her brother Alex (Leo Deluglio in his young version and Manolo Cardona as an adult), her friend Rodolfo’s (Alejandro Nones) best friend, suspects her and seeks revenge.
“Things evolve, we realize what really happened,” Nones said in a recent phone interview about Wednesday’s premiere.
“I really like the way this story is told, the comings and goings, explaining things that have happened. And I really like that you also have music and a collage of pictures at times, ”he added. “That story seemed very interesting to me and especially Dad (cool) to see it in Latin America.”
Rodolfo is also the eldest son of the Lazcanos, a wealthy family that owns casinos that shift their influence so that Alex blames himself for the murder, thus preserving his legacy. Rodolfo’s parents are quite controlling, especially the patriarch César, played by the Spanish actor Ginés García Millán.
“The Lazcano family is definitely a very special family, one that looks like a lot of things, but the reality is that it is not as solid as it seems,” said Nones. “They have a casino empire in Mexico and throughout history we discover that there are other companies besides that are not that legal.”
With a commitment to follow in his father’s footsteps, Rodolfo continues his life after Sarah’s death, but time cannot take that weight away from him.
Guilt gnaws at him. He’s guilty for 18 years, ”Nones said. “Because you don’t have the pants to make important decisions when you should, carrying that 18-year-old weight is extraordinarily strong and awful.”
Production started before the coronavirus pandemic and they had to stop during the quarantine, but they resumed and ended the first season. At this point, they have not yet confirmed whether there will be a second one.
The fact is that, in addition to premiering in 190 countries, it will be the streaming service’s first Spanish-language series to be dubbed in eight languages, including Portuguese, English, French, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Hindi and German.
“Who Mayó a Sara?”, Whose cast is completed by Claudia Ramírez, Carolina Miranda and Eugenio Siller, is produced by Alexis Fridman and Juan Uruchurtu. The plot is the creation of the Chilean screenwriter and writer José Ignacio “Chascas” Valenzuela.
“I’ve talked a lot with Chascas,” said Nones. “I always get in touch with him in sessions where he can express his vision of the character and that helps you as an actor to enrich a lot and have more information and be clearer about everything.”
If the series makes anything clear, it is that the decisions someone makes in childhood can have consequences years later.
“To my former self, I would say calm down, everything will be fine,” said the Venezuelan actor who has lived in Mexico for nearly 20 years. ‘Thousands of times they have done something foolish to say after growing up,’ How is this possible, what did I think? “But it is part of the process of growing and being more aware of things and evolving positively”.
