The least fun part of a friendly Nerf fight is not hit, it has to constantly stop to reload your blaster. The discomfort improved with Nerf’s Rival line, which debuted in 2015, but for 2021 the company is introducing one new Hyper line of blasters fire those smaller foam balls, so you spend even less time reloading.

The Rival line wasn’t Nerf’s first time to use foam balls as an alternative to darts, but the real draw was that it could swing those little balls (that looked like soft miniaturized golf balls) at speeds of up to 70 MPH, or about 30 meters per second. Not fast enough to leave a bruise like paintballs can, but enough speed to avoid getting hit in a firefight. For its new Hyper line, Nerf has redesigned those foam balls with a new resilient material that flies farther and faster, although the increase in speed to about 110 feet per second isn’t the real draw now.

The smaller size of the Nerf Hyper ammunition means that a hopper or magazine has four times the capacity of Nerf Rival rounds. So a rival blaster with a 100-shot hopper could theoretically now hold 400 Hyper rounds, but as a new and smaller firing mechanism is required, it seems the new Hyper balls are not backward compatible.

Instead, Nerf will launch the Hyper line sometime in 2021 with three blasters to start: the $ 30 Nerf Hyper Rush-40 with a gun design and a 40-shot hopper, the $ 40 Nerf Hyper Siege-50 with a capacity of 50 shot. and a pump-action shotgun design, and the $ 70 fully automatic Nerf Hyper Mach-100, which uses D-size batteries to quickly empty the 100-shot funnel when you hold the trigger.

It is not known if Nerf will continue to add to the Rival line once the Hyper line is available. But with better distance, faster speeds, greater capacities, and a cheaper per-shot price tag (200 Hyper round refills are sold for under $ 30), it’s hard to imagine fans not embracing the new line eagerly and with tears. say goodbye to Rival.
