Navy medic killed after shooting and wounding two people in Maryland

A U.S. Navy medic shot dead two sailors on a business park in Frederick, Maryland on Tuesday, authorities said. The suspected gunman, 38-year-old Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, was later shot and killed at Fort Detrick.

The suspect opened fire at Riverside Tech Park, forcing workers to take cover, police chief Jason Lando told reporters on Tuesday. After the shooting, he said, the suspect drove for about 10 minutes to Fort Detrick, where he was murdered by soldiers. The US military said the suspect was “neutralized” within minutes.

“The public is no longer at risk,” said Lando. “There is no longer any cause for alarm in the Frederick community.”

The police received a call for an active shooter on Tuesday morning around 8.15 am. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered that two adult men had been shot and were in critical condition. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital for air treatment.

The FBI, ATF Baltimore, and Maryland State Police are investigating. The motive for the shooting is unclear.

Fort Detrick was to have an active target practice for the next few days in response to an active gunner situation.

“It happens too often. Every time we turn on the TV, we see something like this happening, and now it’s happening in our backyard,” Lando told reporters. “Nobody wants to see things like this.”
