In a challenge in which the substitutes were the protagonists, Industriales and Vegueros determined their rivals before the start of the postseason in the quarterfinals, the dates of which will be announced today by the National Baseball Directorate.
Industriales won 10-6 and will be against the Alazanes de Granma, who are in second position in the preliminary stage, while Pinar del Río will face the tournament’s leaders, the Gallos Espirituanos.
That result also left the rest of the games: Matanzas-Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba-Las Tunas. Of the eight contenders for the Cuban ball crown, only one has not been able to hold on to it in the past 59 seasons: Cienfuegos. Industriales is the winner with 12; It is followed by Santiago de Cuba (8), Vegueros (6) – although the people of Pinar del Río, named Pinar del Río, have four sceptres – Granma (2) and Matanzas, Sancti Spíritus and Las Tunas, with each one.
Of the final game of the preliminary round, Yosimar Quintana, a young candidate from the capital’s troop, was the most prominent on offense, with three hits in six at-bats, with two RBI’s and the same number of runs scored. In the game, blues Randy Linares and Roberto Acevedo hit their first home runs in national series, while receiver Pedro Roque took his number one hit in these classics.
