Naomi Osaka’s awkward Jennifer Brady moment goes viral

Twitter users believe Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka came in second in her acceptance speech, Jennifer Brady.

Many have taken to the social media platform to draw attention to Osaka calling Brady “Jennifer”, despite preferring “Jenny”.

The 23-year-old defeated Brady 6-4 6-3 to win her second Australian Open title and fourth Grand Slam.

At the beginning of her acceptance speech, the resident of Japan turned to Brady and asked, “Do you like being called Jenny or Jennifer?”

The crowd laughed when the number two said clearly, “Jenny.”

Osaka then said, “First, I want to congratulate Jennifer.”

The comment was most likely just a mistake from Osaka when she praised the 25-year-old.

But it has not been received that way on social media.

One Twitter user described Osaka as “rude,” while another thought she was polite for asking in the first place.

However, many found the champions’ comments funny and a harmless example of trolling.

Osaka, who beat Serena Williams 6-3 6-4 in the semi-final, described her joy at winning another Grand Slam.

She said, “This feels incredible. I didn’t play my last slam with fans so this energy means a lot.

Thank you for opening your hearts and arms to us. Playing a Grand Slam is a super privilege and I won’t take it for granted. “

Brady, who played in her first Grand Slam final after winning her first WTA title last August, praised the winner.

“I’d like to congratulate Naomi on a new Grand Slam title,” she said. “She is such an inspiration to us, what she does for the game is great, bringing the sport out.

“I hope young girls watch this and get inspired by what she’s doing.”

Osaka will now keep an eye on her first French Open title in May.

She also aims to win Wimbledon for the first time in June.
