Motorist died after falling from a ravine more than 30 meters deep in Santa Ana | News from El Salvador

The driver was driving with another young man when he apparently lost control of the car and went over the cliff. He died immediately.

José Leonel Marroquín Alvarado, 29, deceased and Harold Acevedo, 19, was seriously injured when they fell into a ravine about 100 feet deep in the vehicle they were driving, police reported.

The accident took place this afternoon on the old street to Lake Coatepeque, in the canton of La Laguna, in Santa Ana.

According to lifeguards for Cruz Verde El Congo, who responded to the emergency, the driver of the vehicle apparently lost control of his car on a turn and flew several meters to the bottom of the cliff.

The impact shot Marroquín’s body from his vehicle and killed him instantly from the multiple blows, authorities reported. The young man accompanying him was taken to the emergency hospital in serious condition.

“I’m going to miss him,” said the deceased young man’s brother, as he was comforted by other family members.

Marroquín Alvarado went home after work, located on the shores of Lake Coatepeque.

According to rescuer Edwin Alcántara, ropes, ladders and other special equipment were needed to salvage the body. The rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with various aid agencies and took an hour and a half due to the roughness of the area.

According to local residents, this is the first time this type of accident has happened in the area.
