Russian security forces detained more than 3,200 people participating in protests across the country’s 11 time zones on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. Most protesters chanted slogans against President Vladimir Putin demanding the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been imprisoned since returning to Russia after being treated in Germany on January 17 for near-fatal poisoning. Navalny, 44, has blamed the Kremlin. for his attempted murder by inserting a nerve gas into his underwear.
The Biden government has criticized the crackdown on protesters and Navalny’s detention. “The US condemns the continued use of harsh tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists by the Russian authorities for a second straight week,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote in a tweet. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called Blinken’s tweet “gross interference in Russia’s internal affairs” and accused Washington of destabilizing the situation.
