Monster Hunter Rise is renewing its food, training and buddy systems

Capcom will be adding some exciting new in-town features to Monster Hunter RiseThe developer and publisher of Monster Hunter Rise invited Polygon to a short video presentation, presenting detailed changes to the food and training systems and several others.

Like the new Wire Bug and rideable Palamutes – both of which you can also use to move around town – Monster Hunter RiseKamura Village will change a lot from previous Monster Hunter games. The changes are most notable when you consider the multiplayer in town, the Buddy system, the training area and the new Dango food system.

Dango – a new food system

Dangos are Japanese dumplings, and they are the main food in it Monster Hunter RiseAt the Dango bar you can buy three Dango on a stick, each with a different flavor. Like previous Monster Hunter games, you can use meal tickets, points, or cash to buy your food.

In addition to improving your health and stamina for your next hunt, the different flavors offer different benefits to help you. And with Monster Hunter Rise, there are more unique food perks, meaning you’re less likely to overlap with an armor skill you’ve already equipped.

When building your three-part Dango you can combine all the flavors you want. But just because you choose a specific flavor, and the benefit that comes with it, doesn’t mean you’ll get it. Each benefit has a percentage chance of being triggered every time you eat.

For example, the video presentation showed the hunter buying Dango Money Maker (more money), Dango Medic (more healing items), and Dango Bird Caller (allowing more Spiribirds to approach while hunting). Money Maker had a 90% chance of activating, while Medic and Bird Caller had 85% and 80% odds, respectively.

Players will unlock new flavors of Dango to combine as they progress through the story. And of course there’s a delicious new food song and a new dance that plays every time you order some Dango.

The Buddy Plaza

Buddies are a big part of Monster Hunter. If you are hunting alone or in a small group, you will need your Palico to assist you. But Rise Expands the buddy system by letting you take both a Palico and a Palamute – the rideable canine companion.

You manage these Buddies in Buddy Plaza, with the help of Buddy Expert Shirubei and Buddy Handler Iori. With their help, you can visit the Buddy Dojo to pick out new Buddies after each quest.

When you hire a new Buddy, he becomes a member of your team. And while you can only have two with you on any given hunt, you can send the others on missions to collect items for you. When playing with friends, you can only take one Buddy – a Palico or a Palamute, depending on what you choose.

Different Palico’s have different moves, while Palamutes all seem to have similar gear slots. You can customize your Buddies with unique equipment on the Smithy.

Multiplayer

Players need Senri the Mailman to switch between offline and online

Senri the Mailman (he’s actually a Palico, but whatever) will help you with all your online play. You also pick up any DLC you buy from Senri.

With Senri you can choose to play online or offline, which determines whether friends or other hunters can join your group. Online and offline are switches Monster Hunter Riseso you have to switch back and forth depending on your situation.

in contrast to Monster Hunter: WorldFriendly hunters can travel to your version of Kamura Village, and you can jump around, explore, or even train together. If you start a quest online, friends or random players will travel to your town before you start your hunt.

We are currently unsure how and if Monster Hunter Rise will address the problem that players had Monster Hunter: World where friends couldn’t take part in a story mission unless they had all seen the single-player cutscene first.

Education

Into the training area Monster Hunter Rise got a complete overhaul. Not only can your friends join you in the training area, but you can also practice against a giant mecha monster dummy.

In the training part you can talk to Sekirei the Trainer (another Palico). They give you training opportunities for the “Toadversary” doll. You can change the position of the head, change the direction, whether it is following the player and whether it is in standby or attack mode. You can even change how many Wirebugs you can access or change the behavior of other targets in the training area.

When you lock your settings, the Toadversary starts taking action – or stops taking action, depending on what you’ve selected. The training area also keeps track of your total damage to the dummy, including the damage from your most recent combo.

Capcom is launched Monster Hunter Rise exclusive to the Nintendo Switch on March 26.
