Monsoon flooding in Indonesia: more than 1,300 forced to evacuate in Jakarta

Severe monsoon flooding in various parts of Indonesia’s capital forced more than 1,300 people to evacuate on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The big picture: The country’s meteorological bureau warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate as the season’s heaviest rain could fall in and around Jakarta in the next week, Reuters said.

  • Officials said early Saturday that about 200 neighborhoods have been affected by the floods.
  • Flood waters reached nearly 6 feet (1.8 meters) high in some areas, according to Reuters.
  • The news agency noted that floods are coming as the country continues to see a high number of coronavirus cases.
