Moderna COVID vaccine swells in some cosmetic facial fillers

A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee noted that people with cosmetic facial fillers may experience side effects from Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Several subjects with facial fillers developed swelling and inflammation after receiving the vaccine. A Los Angeles dermatologist said the responses were caused by immune system dysfunction.

Facial fillers help smooth wrinkles and improve cheeks and lips.

“Your inflammatory immune system is activated when you get a vaccine, that’s how it should work,” said Dr. Shirley Chi to ABC7 in a report Thursday. “So it makes sense that you would see an immune response in certain areas where they see a substance that does not naturally occur in your body.”

Chi said the side effects were easily treated by medical personnel and shouldn’t stop people from getting the vaccine.

“In these cases, the patients all had swelling and inflammation in the area that received the filler,” said Chi. “A few patients had cheek filler six months prior to their vaccination and one patient received lip filler two days after the vaccine. They were all treated with steroids and antihistamines and all their reactions resolved.”

On Dec. 18, Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine was the second drug to receive emergency use approval from the FDA. Pfizer and BioNTech combined to produce a vaccine that was approved on Dec. 11.

The Moderna vaccine does not need to be stored at ultra-frozen temperatures, so it is easier to store than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
