One of the largest sluggers on the open market has almost found a home.
The Atlanta Braves announced that they are an outfielder Marcell Ozuna have agreed on a four-year $ 65 million deal. The contract would include a fifth year option that can increase the total value to $ 80 million.
Ozuna, 30, joined the Braves last winter on a one-year “proof it” type deal after starting his career with the Miami Marlins and also making a stop in St. Louis with the Cardinals.
In the shortened 2020 season, the Dominican Republic native appeared in all 60 games and possessed a triple slash of .338 / .431 / .636 to go along with 18 home runs, an insane 179 wRC + and .444 wOBA and 2.5 fWAR.
Ozuna played in only 19 games on leftfield last year, as he spent most of the campaign as the designated hitter for Atlanta. While a majority of Ozuna’s production comes with the stick, he has also proven to be an average fielder.
For his career, he has saved 12 defense runs (DRS) and an Ultimate Zone Range (UZR) of 25.6. However, should Major League Baseball establish a universal DH, you have to imagine Atlanta will deploy it like that.
