Mitt Romney says Trump would win the GOP nomination in 2024

Senator Mitt Romney said President Donald Trump would win the GOP nomination “in a landslide” if he decided to return to the White House in 2024.

Romney (R – Utah) contradicted DealBook from the New York Times when he raised Trump’s position in the future of the Republican Party.

“He has by far the biggest voice and big impact in my company,” said Romney. “I don’t know if he plans to run in 2024 or not, but if he does, I’m pretty sure he’ll win the nomination.”

Romney made it clear that “a lot can happen between now and 2024,” but quoted polls showing Trump “would win on a landslide” if he were in the race.

A Politico / Morning Consult poll, held in the days following his senatorial acquittal, found that 53 percent of Republicans would vote for Trump in the primaries. Mike Pence got 12 percent in the poll. All other candidates were in the single digits.

But the Utah senator made it clear that he would not be a Trump supporter and would instead side with his smaller caucus.

“I would probably stand behind someone who I thought represented more of the small wing of the Republican party I represent,” he said.
