Missing hiker Narineh Avakian, 37, found dead in California

A Southern California woman has been found dead after disappearing on a solo hike, authorities said.

Narineh Avakian, 37, was discovered near Mt. Waterman Trail in the Angeles National Forest in San Fernando around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Glendale police said.

Avakian was last seen leaving her home in Glendale on March 7 for a one-day hiking expedition, police said.

But when she did not return the next day, her family reported her missing to the authorities.

Avakian did not tell her family where she was going, but she was an avid walker, authorities said.

“According to the family, it is common for Narineh to go hiking in groups and on solo trips – although she has been going alone lately,” police said.

On Thursday afternoon, her car was found parked in the Buckhorn Day Use Area along Angeles Crest Highway, authorities said.

“It should be noted that this area was badly affected by the recent snowstorm,” police said Friday.

No foul play is suspected on her death, but the investigation is ongoing, authorities said.

The coroner’s office is now in the process of determining a cause of death, news channel KCBS-TV reported.
