Missing cockatoo near Tracy Aviary

SALT LAKE CITY – A red-tailed cockatoo that escaped from the Tracy Aviary on Friday was nearby on Saturday morning.

A spokesman for the aviary said the cockatoo, named Matilda, was “flying with her caretaker when she was caught by a gust of wind and blown off the site.” Friday afternoon around 3 p.m. Thanks to a tip from neighbors, Matilda found herself a stone’s throw from the aviary on Saturday.

“Many thanks to our community for your support and kind words during this stressful time,” the aviary wrote on Facebook, adding that employees had a “long night” looking for the bird.

UPDATING! MATILDA HAS BEEN FOUND! That was a long night for everyone involved – it’s nap! We are happy to rent …

This isn’t the first time the Tracy Aviary has had to wrestle the renegade cockatoo. Matilda also escaped from the aviary in January 2020, but was found safe in a Liberty Park tree nearby.

Matilda first escaped in 2013, when she was less than a year old, and was not recovered for three days.
