A neighboring business owner of a Miramar warehouse that hosted a New Year’s Eve party that violated public health orders said Thursday night’s event was not an isolated incident.
“The guys next to us have been throwing parties here all the time, I think they ignore the COVID rules and regulations and just do their own thing and don’t stick to any stipulations,” Sydney Rosin, owner of City Signs, told NBC 7.
At least three partygoers were injured during the naughty New Year’s Eve bash when a stage collapsed under the weight of a crowd, according to San Diego police. Soon after, dozens of people were seen fleeing the warehouse, which is located on Trade Street at Camino Santa Fe, north of Miramar Road.
Rosin said several parties have been held in the warehouse next to his company. Next to City Signs are two empty suites – one right next door and one above it. Both warehouses are rented by the same person and are used for parties. It is unclear whether the person renting the units is the one responsible for organizing the events or subletting the space.
Cigarette butts, solo red cups and empty beer cans and alcohol bottles strewn outside the area indicate a social gathering in the neighborhood, and Rosin said he is concerned Thursday’s event will affect his business.
He told NBC 7 that he fears the public will falsely assume that City Signs has anything to do with the parties. Rosin said he reported the events to 211 about “three or four times”, but no action was taken.
“We felt we could never call a particular number to have them take immediate action. They would just look at it, write down the documentation and say, ‘OK, we’ll check it out,’ which is completely wrong in my opinion. “
NBC 7’s Dave Summers arrived at the warehouse while the guests were filing.
The property manager has also been notified of incidents and they have said a board meeting will be held on the matter. However, according to Rosin, nothing has been done about it.
While having another party next to his company wasn’t the ideal way to end the year, Rosin said he was “relieved” to see the incidents come to light.
“The reason for this is that hopefully something will be done about it now, instead of being upset about this for months and months,” he said. “I just felt my hands were tied, so hopefully something can be done about this now and people can go ahead and do what they should be doing.”
