Julian Marquez’s come-from-behind victory at UFC 258 wasn’t the wildest thing that happened to him on Saturday.
“The Cuban Missile Crisis” had plenty to celebrate, returning from a lengthy injury layoff to scoring its first win since December 2017 in dramatic fashion. Facing Maki Pitolo, Marquez appeared on the scorecards after two hard-fought rounds, but he went all-out for a finish in the third to secure an anaconda-choke submission with just 43 seconds left in the race.
Leading up to his return, Marquez told the media he planned to run for a Miley Cyrus cover of the classic Blondie song. Heart of glassHis devotion to the pop star didn’t end there, as he ended his interview after the fight with a Valentine’s Day callout targeting Cyrus.
“I have 31 months to use this goddamn microphone and call these people right now,” said Marquez. “This is my time to shine, so Miley Cyrus, will you be my Valentine?”
Sure enough, the message came to Cyrus and she responded the same way via Twitter:
