Michigan’s virus numbers look better

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Michigan has been declining for more than 29 days, a state scientist reported Wednesday.

“It will also be important during this holiday season and on New Year’s Eve to ensure that we maintain that social distance. That will be very important, ”says Sarah Lyon-Callo, head of the epidemiology office.

“We will be monitoring this data throughout the holiday season to determine if we will see a resurgence of the case,” said Lyon-Callo.

The state last week reported the lowest weekly total number of new cases, 28,072, since the end of October.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer responded with a ban on dining in restaurants, personal high school classes, and other business restrictions. The eating ban will remain in effect until January 15.

“We are hopeful that Michiganders will do what we did over Thanksgiving, not traveling so much, not collecting so much, not contributing to that much dissemination,” Whitmer said. “And if that’s the case, we can take more aggressive steps to re-enroll right after the first of the year.”

Meanwhile, the health department said more than 231,000 doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have been delivered to local health departments and hospitals. More than 120,000 additional doses are expected next week.
