(WXYZ) – The University of Michigan is delaying some surgeries to enable the rapidly accelerating COVID-19 shots.
Justin Dimick, the Michigan Surgery professor and president, said the entire state is risky.
Dimick called on the state for help as no new restrictions have been announced amid the increase in COVID-19 cases in Michigan.
Michigan Medicine also released the following statement:
“As with many health systems across the state and metro region, Michigan Medicine this week experienced record high emergency and admission volumes for both COVID and non-COVID care, resulting in extremely high hospital occupancy. Michigan Medicine has had to make the tough decision to reschedule a small number of scheduled surgeries late this week and next week to maintain a safe occupancy rate. 1.2% of all surgeries. We constantly monitor the changing situation and will make further adjustments to ensure that the schedule is consistent with our staff and the availability of hospital rooms, always keeping the safety of our patients and staff our highest priority remains. “

Michigan has reported thousands of new cases every day for the past week, and there are now more than 100,000 active cases of the virus in Michigan, the highest number since mid-November, when a partial shutdown was announced.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the number of hospital admissions for COVID-19 in Michigan has increased across all age groups, up 360% since Feb. 28.
As COVID hospital admissions increase across Michigan, ICUs in different regions are approaching capacity, according to new data.
In addition, the percentage of hospital beds occupied by persons with COVID-19 has increased by 203% since February 28. Currently 11.9% of the beds are used; trends for COVID-19 hospital admissions are on the rise, officials say.
The current statewide COVID-19 positivity rate is the highest since April 24, 2020, the State Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.
The positivity rate is up 348% and the number of cases is up 375% since the previous low on Feb. 19. Currently the percentage stands at 15.6%.
Michigan has the highest number of cases and the highest number of cases in the entire country in the past seven days.
