Michigan coronavirus cases up to 642,869; Death toll now at 15,984

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan rose to 642,869 on Thursday, including 15,984 deaths, state officials report.

Thursday’s update includes a total of 5,224 new cases and 49 additional deaths, including 30 from a Vital Records review. On Wednesday, the state reported a total of 637,645 cases and 15,935 deaths. It is the highest one-day total in 2021 and the highest since December 11, 2020.

Testing has been steady, about 35,000 diagnostic tests reported on average per day, with a 7-day positive rate above 9% as of Wednesday. The state has reported an increase in hospital admissions in the past three weeks.

Michigan’s 7-day moving average for daily cases was 3,493 Thursday – the highest since early January. The death average over seven days was Thursday 22 and has been flat for several weeks. The state’s death rate is 2.5%. The state is also reporting “active cases,” which were listed at 64,200 on Thursday. More than 562,000 have been restored in Michigan.

Michigan has more than reported 3.8 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, as of Wednesday, with 29.6% of residents having received at least one dose.
