Michael’s Arts & Crafts is closing its store at 808 Columbus Avenue at 99th Street, located in the Columbus Square shopping and apartment complex.
Along with Whole Foods, TJ Maxx and Home Goods, Michael’s has been one of Columbus Square’s primary tenants since its inception, securing its lease before the complex’s construction was completed in 2010.
Michael’s extended its lease for the 34,424 square feet of space in 2018, but window signs indicate the store is underway and offers some clearance discounts.
We contacted the UWS store and the company’s press department for more information, including an intended closing date.

According to its website, the company operates “more than 1,250 Michaels stores in 49 states and Canada,” making it “the largest arts and crafts retailer in North America (by number of stores)”. The company reported fiscal year 2018 sales of $ 5.3 billion.
Michael’s has a different location in Manhattan in Chelsea and several others in the boroughs.
More closures at the top of the west
It was recently announced that the retail chain would be closing several of its other locations, including one in North Babylon, Long Island, and at a North Carolina mall.
According to the Center for an Urban Future’s State of the Chains report, more than 1,000 retail chains in NYC will be closed by 2020, which is nearly one in seven stores.
Some of the larger companies closing UWS locations in 2020 include:
- Modell’s: All retail locations closed, including the two UWS stores.
- Century 21: Closed all 13 stores, including a location on 66th and Broadway.
- Flying Tiger Copenhagen: Closed all stores in the US, including the location at 424 Columbus Avenue, between 80th and 81st Streets.
- Jean Louis David: Closed all four Manhattan locations, including one at 2146 Broadway, between 75th and 76th Streets.
- Unleashed By Petco: Closed its location at 159 Columbus Avenue, between 67th and 68th Streets.
- Papyrus: All locations closed, including three on the UWS: 209 Columbus Avenue (between 69th and 70th Streets), 2157 Broadway (on 76th and Broadway), and their store in the Shops at Columbus Circle.
