The New York Mets have nominated veteran Cuban outfielder Guillermo Heredia for assignment. The move was made to create a spot on the 40-man roster for the also experienced outfielder. Kevin ‘Superman’ Pillar, whose contract with the team is now official and formal.
‘El Conde’ Heredia played in seven games for the Mets after claiming him from Pirates waivers in August. In all, the West Indian patrol hit .212 / 278 / .394 in 36 at bats for Pittsburgh and New York.
He is not far behind the numbers (.240 / .317 / .342) that Heredia has posted in his four previous Major League-seasons, in more than 1,110 at-bats with the Seattle Mariners (2016-18) and Tampa Rays Bay (2019).
The 30-year-old can provide depth on all three outfield positions, so the Mets certainly hope Heredia will be unclaimed and remain in the farm system as a backup option in the event of injury.
The Mets are quite packed with outfield options – outfield – on the active roster, but Heredia and off-star guest Mallex Smith is projected as Triple-A’s first man if a replacement is needed.
