Why? Because of the salary situation of the Mets after the change in which they took over Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor and Venezuelan Carlos Carrasco. LeMahieu’s price could allow the Mets to beat the luxury tax in 2021.
But both sides could find ways to make a deal. Martino says the Mets can take other measures to lower payroll and allow LeMahieu’s arrival.
LeMahieu could be a good match for the Mets, especially if they want to keep Jeff McNeil in the outfield (instead of second base) and use Dom Smith as the designated hitter if he continues the position in NL in 2021.
