Mets adds Kevin Pillar to MLB-free agency

The Mets upgraded to their outfield again and agreed to a one-year contract with free agent Kevin Pillar on Monday, The Post’s Mike Puma confirmed.

The exact terms of the deal were not immediately known.

The 32-year-old gives the Mets a third option downtown, along with Brandon Nimmo and the minor league Albert Almora Jr. contracts. He can also provide some flexibility in the left field, where Dom Smith is likely to start.

The right wing Pillar has bounced around with the Blue Jays after seven seasons. He hit .308 with two home runs, 13 RBI’s and a .801 OPS in 24 games to end 2020 with the Rockies. Pillar started with the Red Sox last season, hitting .274 in 30 games.

Missing prize-free agent centerfielder George Springer, the Mets were looking to improve their off-season outfield. Although Pillar played mainly in the center, he is not the same player as he had previously in his career. But he could also serve as a defensive substitute for Smith in the left. He could also start against leftists, who he has had a .298 / .332 / .538 slash against for the past two years.
